Why Choose MamaSan Sharehouse?
1.Fostering a Sense of Community Among International Students
At MamaSan Sharehouse, all members are international students who have bravely come to Japan with dreams and aspirations. This unique environment allows students from various fields to support and motivate each other. Unlike living alone in a rented apartment, residing in the MamaSan Sharehouse means having fellow students who welcome newcomers, creating a significant advantage for those who have just arrived in Japan.
2.Engage with Diverse Cultures
At MamaSan Sharehouse, we have welcomed international students from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds. Our past residents have hailed from Germany, Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Finland, the UK, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico, Mongolia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, and South Korea, among others. Each student brings a unique background, and living together opens up opportunities for new discoveries in studies, hobbies, and cultures.
3.Experience Authentic Japanese Culture in a Community-Centric Sharehouse
MamaSan Sharehouse operates out of a traditional house, originally built for family living, which we now offer to international students. The building itself showcases unique Japanese architectural features, and the neighborhood is home to long-standing local residents. Because of our close relationship with the community, the neighbors welcome students as if they were their own children. Additionally, students may occasionally receive invitations to learn about Japanese culture and local wisdom or participate in community events and festivities.
4.Unique Events and Opportunities for Communication Among Sharehouses
At MamaSan, we regularly host events centered around international students. In the past, these events have included opportunities to introduce students' backgrounds to local residents and share our activities with the community. We facilitate interactions not only within the same sharehouse but also between multiple sharehouses operated by MamaSan, fostering a sense of community and connection among all residents.
5.Easily Consult MamaSan via LINE or Slack
At MamaSan, we create chat groups for each sharehouse and invite residents to join. This setup allows for smooth reporting of any issues or questions to MamaSan staff. While traditional Japanese rental housing typically requires communication in Japanese via phone or email, at MamaSan Sharehouse, we accommodate residents by enabling communication in English as well.
※ We Offer a Women-Only Dormitory
Japan is a safe and clean country with a relatively low crime rate, but families often worry about studying abroad. This concern is especially common for women studying alone. To address this, we have established women-only sharehouses, continuously expanding our offerings to meet the needs and preferences of international female students and their families.

Voices of International Students Who Lived at MamaSan Sharehouse
Living at MamaSan Sharehouse was an exciting experience.
When everyone’s schedules aligned, we would have BBQs on the terrace or in the garden, and other members introduced me to friends from the same university and local Japanese friends. Thanks to everyone, I was able to enjoy each day to the fullest.
Additionally, participating in community events and interacting with local residents allowed us international students to experience the authentic aspects of Japanese culture that we might not have encountered otherwise.
I came to Japan to study alone, with no acquaintances or friends.
I still remember the day I first visited the sharehouse, and the members warmly welcomed me with smiles. Not only did we spend time together at home and university, but we also became friends who could share our troubles and plan trips to explore various parts of Japan together. I gained companions with whom I could share both the joys and challenges of life outside of studying.
